The difference between a nuclear submarine and a conventional submarine is the power source. The performance advantages of a nuclear submarine, powered by a nuclear reactor, are significant compared to conventional submarines (usually diesel, electric, etc.). Nuclear power, being completely independent of the atmosphere, eliminates the need for the submarine to frequently surface, as is often required in conventional submarines. The large amount of power generated by a nuclear reactor allows nuclear submarines to operate at high speeds for extended periods of time.
